What can I use now the groups at Google have finally done the inevitable? I have heard of a good German one but is there a decent British one in the same price range.

Anyone know if Virgin support Usenet? I could get cable if it is worth it.

same price range.

eternal september or albasani.net

e same price range.

Not yet to me!

Jonathan

Virgin cable broadband does. no extra charge. Dunno about Virgin ADSL, but I'd guess so.

If all you want is text only groups then

free.

news.virginmedia.com - see link above for setup details.

It might be for other reasons...

It still works for me (although I very rarely use Google to read uk.d-i-y).

same price range.

Used to use the German one (news.individual.net) but after a couple of access glitches (possibly not their fault) went over to Astraweb which is (sort of) pay as you go instead of contract.

same price range.

"The Big 8 Management Board is sad to report we have learned that B8MB Chairman Alexander Bartolich died suddenly of a cardiac event at his home in Austria last weekend. [...] The Albasani.net servers are still operating, but it is unknown at this time for how much longer. We don't yet know if there will be someone with the technical expertise and physical and administrative access available to continue the services. "

They haven't done enything yet, at least nothing that you can't undo.

Same here, but I have taken to using Free Agent version 1.0 as newsreader, connected to news server nntp.aioe.org, rather than Google groups.

What do you mean by "the inevitable"?

Seems they still do.

eternal september or albasani.net

The latter may be a risky bet as ALex BArtolich died a week or so ago, so the future of his server may be in doubt.

well they don't seem to do line wrap any more, they munge < and > characters to literal < and > strings in plain text, and they always send a mail cc; if a message has a reply-to: header in it, apart from that ...

Posting via Virgin here ...

Hey Geoff, what speed is your virgin, how much do you pay, do you also have virgin phone? I think i'm being ripped-off (for a change).

It has, of course, crept up substantially recently

I think I have the XXL package (60M broadband, Discovery channels and phone with free w/end calls) for, I think, £60.40. Last month was skewed by paying £20 for the Tivo box

Yes, indeed they do. I am posting via Virgin's news server right now ...

S*it a brick, I'm paying £27.50 for 10 megs and line rental (£11?) + calls. No tv. I think a phone call is in order. Bastards.

I can't cross post with it. I might just need to learn how but the thing with Google is the search is tailored to suit me and that doesn't suit me also their service to the American and who knows what other Secret Services is not in the spirit of the web.

Or freedom of speech.

Thanks all, for the help.

Every time they improve Google Groups I get upset. This is the last one as far as I am concerned.

They have completely changed the format. Previously it was very user friendly. Now very similar to newsgroups. They must be halfwits, most people used it because it WASN'T like a newsgroup. I have gone to Evening September, bollocks to them
