Its using masses of line. Any ideas on how to stop it?

If it is an auto feed one and it is like any other that I have seen then it will auto feed every time you start/stop the motor, using up loads of line. Try keeping it running rather than using it stop/start.
There's usually an on/off switch.....
Don't be so aggressive with it. It's a *Strimmer* not a chainsaw
