The shelves are going in the study and will be fully of books, not almost, but completely full.
Can anyone give me the optimal spacing for the verticals - obviously it will be better to use four rather than just three, won't it?

I have a 6foot alcove with 4 spur uprights (same as Screwfix). Shevig is contiboard and supports books witth o sagging & I thought this was overkill

This looks similar to the Spur steel stuff.
I've used this on a few occasions for book and other shelves in workshops etc. and it's very strong.
For 1.4m and books, three verticals will be fine as long as you use a stout material for the shelves.
For three, I would put one in the middle and the others about 15% of the length in from each end - i.e. about 20-25cm.
It's not that critical.

Up to 18" or so spacing is fine for this stuff but that leaves you with about a 10" overhang at each end which might be a bit much. Make sure you fix the shelves to the brackets...
As the load is going to be high use a good sized screw in every hole of the verticals.

Me, I veered quite the other way: there's 1.1428571 shedloads of Spur shelving along the previously-uninterrupted RH wall of my study at home; each upright is held in at the screw-hole-provided intervals - about 30cm apart, from memory - by relatively monstrous woodscrews - 6mmx100 - into the studs of the stud-n-plasterboard wall. Even fully loaded with books, and more recently[1] a deeper shelf carrying a 30kg? office-grade Laserjet, I reckon that lot's going *nowhere*[2]. Measuring the likely depth of the studs by use of compare-and-contrast on the inner walls of the two rooms versus the outer wall along the corridor came close to convincing me that the screws wouldn't go right through into the next door room, but the first one still went in with non-zero amounts of trepidation!

[1] Well, the 6 original uprights were in the shed (garage, really) for a few days; the relocation of the laserjet to that room prompted me to buy one more upright, and was I *ever* glad to have bought brand-name Spur stuff, in Standard Boring White, meaning I could pick up one more upright and a couple of deeper - 340mm? - brackets some 3+ years after the original shelfomania with no worries about it looking any different...
[2] Pride, of course, comes before a fall. So I can confidently expect to come home tonight to find the entire wall and attached shelved have collapsed, with the LJ having set fire to its load of paper as it fell; expect fire engines in attendance at the smoking remains of Casa Zaba, with cats looking accusingly up at me when I show up with a "NOW where are we supposed to sleep and pee now that your comfy double bed's gone up in flames, sunshine?" look...
