fridge overfreezing

I have one of those old electrolux fridge freezers, a few weeks ago I noticed that the light in the fridge had gone out, so whenver I opened the fridge the light would not come on, I now notice that the fridge freezes anything that is put in it no matter how low or high I place the knob, I am wondering if the fridge has had it's day or ha anyone run into a similar problem and was able to fix it?

IIRC, paradoxically this is a symptom of loss of refrigerant. Regret, forget precisely why refrigerant loss send temp control spiralling down rather than up. Can anyone explain please?

Assuming there's a leak, you'll need to get it found & repaired. Then the condenser needs recharging with gas. All a job for a refridgeration specialist BUT there's barely a chance that repair is economic for a fridg out of guarantee. Dump it.

The only way to tell is to put an accurate thermocouple on the evaporator plate near the phial and measure the temperature if it is -20deg or so it is not the system but a faulty thermostat. Refrigeration works by compressing the gas into liquid then reducing its pressure so it evaporates back into a gas, when the refrigerant is reduced the pressure is less so it gets colder, but this is less effective because it then does not reach the entire system.
