Fix Security Chain to UPVC Door

Mar 14, 2007 3 Replies

Hi -

My old mum is delighted with her new upvc porch, but wants a security chain on the outer door.

I can think of various methods involving self-tappers, toggle bolts etc, but don't feel wholly confident that they'd hold properly. Is there a 'proper' way to fix security devices to plastic doors & frames?

Thanks in advance!

Is it a high strength security door with a metal core? If it is then self tappers work quite well.

If not then glue and a large plate is probably best.

I don't think a security chain offers much real security, but can conversely be an obstacle to keyholders getting in in an emergency.

Intercom and/or CCTV system might be more useful, and not risk damaging the door.

Owain

It doesn't offer a lot of physical security Owain, but it's a useful safeguard against distraction burglary techniques. Elderly people are especially targeted by these scumbags - persuade them to open the door with some pretext about collecting for charity, reading the meter etc, and then barge in to loot the premises. Being able to *partially* open the door offers specific advantages in that scenario, although I do consur with your general point.
