That may be your experience, but mine is to the contrary.

About 10 years ago I looked at sme chests of drawers in Ikea, as I needed the drawers to be big enough from back to front - a lot are very shallow. At that time the bottoms of the drawers were pretty solid. Not sure about the test of standing on one, but not flimsy. About 3 years ago the same line had hardboard bottoms, so I bought 2 chests from BHF, spent hours doing a refurbishment - which included replacing the worn out wooden runners with modern metal ones - and they're ideal for what I want and solid as well.

I've found, roughly, you get what you pay for. I bought a £200 solid wood chest of drawers about 10 years back, and it still looks good and works.

In fact, I think everything I've bought there still 'works' with the exception of an odd open frame book case - the shelves have bowed.
