Fireproof insulation

Hi all,

Does anybody have links for lightweight fireproof insulation (preferably either pellets or 'blanket' type) ?

I've got a 'walk in fireplace' and therefore a rather wide chimmney that is sealed off with an aluminium plate (with a trapdoor in it) about 8' up. Obviously a fair amount of heat vanishes up the chimmney and I'd like to put something on top of the aluminium plate to insulate it but since the steel flue for my woodburner passes through the plate it would have to be fireproof and also lightweight as the plate isn't that thick (1-2mm)

Any suggestions ?

Cheers,

John

Thanks, but isn't rockwool fairly heavy, or am I being misled by the name ?

Cheers,

John

It's slightly heavier than glasswool (fibreglass) given that it's made from rocks rather than glass, but I can't see this being a problem.

Failing that, you can buy fireproof expanding foam, although it's insulating properties are not as good as rockwool

Thanks, I'll look into that,

Cheers,

John

Not in the quantities that you will be needing it. In fact you could also use the fibreglass wool stuff if you prefer - they both have the same fire resitance rating.

Rockwool.

We've just added insulation to our HWC with a rockwool blanket lined with aluminium foil and I'm very impressed.
