I was told by the plasterer to put Wickes matt brilliant white watered down 75:25 as the first coat. Anybody used this paint and does the proportion of water sound right?

Any matt brilliant white emulsion should be fine; I'm sure Wickes is as good as any for the job. Wickes do an own-brand special plaster priming paint as it happens (can't say I've tried it tho; and it only comes in whopping great tubs).
Proportions sound OK (note that it's 75% paint: 25% water!)

I prefer to use Dulux Trade Supermatt, diluted as directed on the tin. It is specifically formulated for fresh plaster.
Christian.
I'd use about 50/50 water/paint mix otherwise it might dry out too quickly.
