Emery paper

You need to go to an engineers suppliers and better quality ironmongers should stock it.

There will be an app for that.

I live in the country, near a dull town. The nearest proper engineers' supplier costs more in petrol to get to and back from, than the emery cloth would cost.

We have one ironmonger's here, and it is not of high quality. It closes at 4 pm!

Even more reason to purchase from Amazon. Order in the evening and you can get next day with Prime.

If they fail to deliver you'll normally get a refund and a delivery the following day. I've had whole months refunded due to a failed, drive by, delivery 'attempt'.

Emery cloth is sometimes available from sewing supply places. That's where I bought my last batch.

It's a world of discovery for you....

Thanks. My nearest B&Q is near the engineering supplier, so no point. But anyway, I bought the sheets for the machine use from Screwfix, one alone was more than adequate, and was certainly cheaper than driving anywhere else.

My main point in the Original Post was to wonder why Emery Paper is not known about by businesses and people now. What do they use instead?

That's what the internet is for I buy silicon carbide paper from Halfords...or you can buy (inferior) aluminium oxide abrasive paper online, That is what 'emery' is - or was. No one uses 'natural emery' any more.

There's one type that is very strong and durable, but I don't know of a source - and it's cloth only and probably limited range of grits: linishing belt. Can't afford to have that falling apart or wearing out too soon. I have some industrial grade fron 60 years ago - don't know what it's like nowadays.

I was in our local Toolstation today. I wondered if the 30-something female assistant would know what emery cloth was. She didn't, but called it up on the terminal, and they do supply it, in several forms, but had none in stock. Then she said: "That's what my Grandad had hanging from a pole in his workshop, he had all kinds of different stuff hanging from it. That's it, emery cloth." So there is hope yet.

He's already been told that, and that Jewsons do a cloth version. But hey.

Jewsons may well do a cloth version, but it's no use if the assistant at the counter doesn't know what it is.

Maybe, but if you use their SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) of SGA26734, knowing what it is shouldn't matter. They might even learn something.
