Gasp in amazement

"Your account balance is £1,786.00

in credit You're paying £265.00 on the 23rd of each month by Direct Debit"

They *doubled* it. Some time ago. Used to be £80, then it was £120... I assumed I might have been using it.

Time to send them a meter reading. Its their way (just like the French) of punishing me for refusing a smart meter.

When did you last send them a meter reading?

I've worked out my version of what the direct debit should be, based on 1 year of my consumption at their new October rates, plus standing charges, minus my credit balance, divided by 12

I think it should be £121/m they've said they want £145/m

I send them readings at start of sept and start of march, which is what they ask.

When I got switched to EDF, they claimed my dumbed-down SMETS1 meter would be able to become smart again, but they haven't managed it yet ...

Looks to me as if their £145 would be within a couple of pounds a month of your forecast of your annual total if they had refunded not just part of your £600 credit but the whole of it. I'd be inclined to tell them you'll pay the £145 /if/ they now refund the full amount. And at the same time tell them if they won't you want to know what are - and were - were their "reasonable grounds not to" [Ofgem's words].

July, and this morning.

Then you must have mis-read the meter or mistyped what you entered.

Now with my smart meter I don't let them do this. I pay on a metered bill every quarter. When the gov subsidy came along last year it has of course cocked up their calculations, and that is why people paying so much per month ended up so far in credit. As I say, if I spot a monthly bill out of sequence I get straight onto them. Brian

Do they charge you the same price as for an averaged monthly direct debit?

The bog standard £400 discount should have made no difference at all to the calculation for people paying by Direct Debit. Suppliers were to deduct it from the amount collected or repay it to the same account month by month. HMG required that for the obvious reason it would otherwise have been bugger all use for the cost of living crisis unless and until suppliers got around to repaying some months later.

Not necessarily. E.g. a loft full of grow-lights can be pricey.

From what I have read, a piece of heavy-duty cable a few tens of cm long can bypass many things. Also, haven't the loft cables of adjoining houses occasionally been tapped for a "free" supply?

Nope. Have photos to prove it

Dont have those. My point is that I am simply not using the electricity I am being charged for.

I am not surprised :)

Worth checking that EDF are using the meter readings you send. It's possible they've got those wrong.

If not ISTM you need EDF to reset your account by repaying all or most of the balance and setting a new DD based on your meter readings. I doubt their system will do that automatically from just one more reading. You need to phone or webchat.

That's what they say on their website are my readings.

I think I might phone OFGEM instead :-[)

It's your time so if you want to waste it...

If he was with Octopus he could open their app and reset his DD in seconds. Job done.

Tim

So only a one more days to go :)

EDF is to move its five million customers onto Octopus Energy's Kraken platform from the summer of 2023.
