Doesn't explain how hire companies find out (if they do).

Car rental is cheaper in the USA than it is here.

I've never paid more than $700 for a three-week hire (including insurance).

It's not a federal case there like it is here, possibly because car rental is seen and operated as an essential part of the inter-city public transport (ie, aviation) system.

They don't.

In the case of British hirers, they can't.
