Malwarebytes (plus 1) said the nasty thing was in advertisements. Anybody who clicks on advertisements deserves all they get.
What Newspaper do you read.
The Times - because, despite Murdoch, there is a semblance of journalism and they don't print words of more than 1 syllable in bold.
And the comments section are only populated by middle aged moderate loons rather than fullscale spazzers like the Evening Standard and the Mail.
Advertisements generally come from 3rd party servers such that the website you actually want to use has very little control over the content provided by the advertisers.
It's always surprising to me when you see the supposedly secure payment pages etc. of some companies websites that are importing javascript etc. from 3rd parties where they have no control whatsoever over what the scripts do to the pages.

The danger from a poisoned ad comes not from when its clicked, but when its *displayed*.
Unless they do the real work inside an iframe. The 3rd party scripts would have no access inside there.

I've not looked lately, but don't the VerifiedByVisa etc. use IFRAMEs?
There are quite a number of mechanisms, including loading malicious sites in an iframe, or malicious flash or java content. You can do a fair amountin javascript as well.
