Cutting a wall for a window

I intend putting a window in my study on the first floor on an elevation without any windows and it would be restricted in size due to being close to my neighbour.

The work would need completing from the inside -

Do I get a quote from a builder or a window company

Is it an easy job to complete from inside??

Thanks for any advice!

You can't just make holes in walls without properly supporting what is above!

The work needs to be done by a builder, who will need to insert a lintel above the aperture to support the wall/roof etc. above. You will need Building Regs approval in order to certify that it has been done safely (and to certify that the new window meets the latest energy efficiency requirements). You will probably also need Planning Permission.

I don't see *any* prospect of being able to do it without access to the outside of the building.

Most window companies will do the hole cutting as well, so I'd get a quote from a window company. They will put the lintel in and everything.

You will need access to the outside to cut the hole. They will probably fit the window from inside.

Oh yes you can! You shouldn't of course.

Only if you want to preside over a heap of rubble rather than a house!
