If it's mechanically and electrically sound, can't you just clean up the old one?

no because its really old, the plastic has chipped off the red lines, the switch is orange colour which looks old, and the screws are dark when a new one would be silver. if i could get a new one for =A35-10 i'd do that but cant find the same size. have they changed the standard size of a cooker switch?

Could you make a 'surround' (Assuming the newer switch plate etc. is smaller? Or has different ratio of height to width etc.) of nice material that would either match or contrast nicely with the wall colour etc. A 'Trim plate' if you wish to call it that? A bit of experimenting with cardboard and a sharp (X.Acto knife.) could help decide suitable and good looking dimensions?

You probably need to get a new backing box, and do a proper job really.

Hmmm...All I can see is a page with the "tags" at the bottom left corner and some other thumbnails along the bottom but if I copy the "direct link" to IE it does indeed show the switch .Here is what I see.

It's not the size the OP asked about. They're about twice as high. They must be at least 30 years old now.

thanks all. andy wade, you found the exact same one, well done! i couldnt find it anywhere.. i guess i will either:

- leave it and clean as much as poss

- replace with same one =A315 approx

- get a new back box and mode modern front - depends whether i can get away with filling the outside, or ask the plasterer to fill around the new box when he's here?
