Combi boiler dripping

I?ve got an Ideal Logic Plus combi boiler and last night it started dripping water from the area in the region of the pressure gauge.



I turned off the heating and this morning it?s stopped dripping plus the pressure gauge is showing it needs topping up with water.



I?m planning on not using it until the coming week when I can get someone to look at it so I?m not going to top up the water as it?ll probably make it drip again.



My question is, can I use it for hot water because presumably it?s a different circuit within the boiler that does the heating of water ? one that doesn?t pass through the area of the boiler?s piping that appears to be leaking?

On combi boilers the pressure gauge is often on the hot water storage vessel so that may not be possible but i guess the only way to find out is to give it a try.

As a very general rule the gauge is on the unvented primary and needs to be pressurised for HW.

Can you isolate the leak? Most things on boilers are trivial to change and fairly cheap.

The short answer is probably not...

Most combi boilers will have a primary circuit that includes the main heat exchanger, the pump, and the radiators, plus the filling loop connection and the pressure gauge.

When asked to provide hot water rather than heat the rads, all that changes is that a diversion valve redirects the flow that would normally go to the rads, to a short internal loop that has secondary plate heat exchanger on it in place of the rads. That allows the incoming mains cold water to be heated indirectly from the primary flow through the main HX. Hence if the leak is in the boiler, it will likely leak regardless of heating mode.
