Can you paint onto glass

I'd like to do a simple (well in my head it's simple) job of painting some white paint (not whitewash) onto glass can this be done?

I remember internal glass doors which had been painted as though they were wooden panels ... with people forever having to be warned "careful it's glass"

Yes. Classic signwriters do it all the time. The glass needs to be grease free, dry and clean or you will have peeling problems later.

There are specific decorative glass paint formulations available from hobby shops (mostly transparent).

Ordinary white gloss will stick fairly well to clean glass.

Plenty of 100 year old paint surviving on glass, if nowhere else

The bathroom in my 1936 house is "tiled" with 12"x12" sheets of glass painted.

Heh, one of the student hovels I lived in had large mirror tiles, held by double sided sticky pads onto peeling wallpaper ... the steam when you had a bath made it "interesting".
