That's a shame. Imagine not trusting a US company.

Probably the worst design 0 Westinghouse is at least in use. There are, IIRC, 5 types. An extensive filtering was applied in USAnia on ~30 and it ruled out all of those that weren't 'real'. Pebble bed, molten salt are 2. Need something that is passively cooled and can't run away in the event of a fault. Those characteristics would allow SMRs near urban areas. Needs a lot at Drax to replace subsidised destruction. As for the timescale just get the damned things running in 3 years and stop building big reactors.

The Westinghouse AP1000, and Chinese derivatives (e.g. CAP1400) do seem the best option currently in use. Better/cheaper build record than the EPR (Sizewell). We were going to build a few about 10 years ago, but Westinghouse got in to financial trouble.

I think I would certainly try some of the RollsRoyce SMR, but the Westinghouse reactor would be more of a banker. Perhaps do a reciprocal deal with the USA? We each build some of each.

Hopefully better options will come along soon, but we need to build now.

AP1000 would take too long to get through approvals

The AP1000 reactor design received design acceptance in the UK in March

2017. So only site specific stuff is needed.

It's not that simple. On a 'built on site' reactor *every stage* of the build has to be approved. That's why they take 15 years

SMRs are *type approved*. The reactor comes out of the factory with everything sorted and there is minimal on site inspection and certification needed.

And only EDF or the Chinese could find the money to build anything.

The AP1000 is *type approved* (GDA), as is the EPR, ABWR and HPR100, but RR SMR is still going through stage 3,

I don't think the rank and file Americans are worried about this. Everyone knows that nukes which are actually ready to build, are all spoken for already.

Huh. Isn't that why Trump is suing the BBC for $5 billion ?. He'll do a TACO if Starmer lets Westinghouse gets our SMR business.

You seem to have great faith in Trump's altruism, which not a thing he is known for.

Well the BBC may be guilty under Florida law, but who is going to enforce that? Even Trump isn't that stupid. It's more playground politics
