Government to hand out free plug-in batteries

The government will give free plug-in batteries to low-income households to help them cut their energy bills and store power.



Thats according to reports in The i Paper, which says the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has a plan to see the government buy plug-in batteries in bulk and give them to those hit hardest by rising gas prices.



The paper says this is among a list of ideas made by the government and clean energy technology experts Nesta to help households cut costs.



Since the beginning of the US-Iran war and closing of the Strait of Hormuz in February, ministers have been searching for ways to protect billpayers, including changing the laws on plug-in solar panels.



A plug-in solar panel, which connects directly into the wall socket, can cut roughly £200 from yearly energy bills.



If youre on a time-of-use tariff, a plug-in battery will work by drawing electricity from the grid (when plugged into the socket) when its cheap and sending it back through the same socket when its expensive.



Plug-in batteries retail for about £500 and are far cheaper than regular solar batteries.



The plans were made by former energy secretary, now foreign secretary, Ed Miliband. However, Whitehall maintains a huge appetite for technology that can help people access clean and cheap energy.



Whether or not to go ahead with the bulk buying and handing out of plug- in batteries will depend on talks with the Treasury, the Crown Commercial Agency (the governments procurement division) and the new national energy firm GB Energy, with responsibility falling to Milibands successor Miatta Fahnbulleh.



We dont know yet which households will be eligible for the free plug-in batteries, if they are approved, but its likely that those earning less than £36,000 a year and/or on state benefits and/or in a home with a low EPC rating will be prioritised, as is the case with some solar government grants, including the Warm Homes: Local Grant.

Or even flying bacon, when those 'free' batteries catch fire after user abuse.

Elsewhere I have seen stated that they will not be able to power the property, so what is their point ?. Do they have a built-in inverter and a 3-pin socket ?

If the UK regs change they could - looks to be about 2kWh which optimisitically could save the user 30p a day, for £900 retail.

Also British Gas are pushing

The point seems to be distributed battery storage for the suppliers to reduce peak demand on generation/grid on most days.

That of course requires the cost of energy to remain the same ....

The cheap renewable energy that we’ve been promised for ~30 years will be here soon, or sometime, or more probably never. If however the price of electricity should fall, the payback time for the cost of the battery will probably exceed its lifetime, if it doesn’t already.

Well, it requires the difference between standard and off-peak rates to remain similar, but that is also uncertain.

I looked at this for a 16KWh battery, which was available for about £1200. That had the potential for a £3 a day saving in electricity cost, with a pay-back period for the battery of 15 months.

Add in the cost of an inverter and installation, and the pay back period is 3 years.

Obviously, it depends on using quite a lot of electricity during the day. And doing that throughout the year.

I'm not sure about the life span of inverters, but that's the more expensive part of the system. The battery is not that expensive to replace.

By which time the battery is f***ed anyway.

Well according to you, £1200. By far the largest part of the cost.

Of course, Once everybody has spent 5 grand on the ability to farm cheap offpeak electricity, it wont be cheap or offpeak any more will it?

Or when we have a repeat of 23rd Jun 2026, when we (allegedly) had to plead the French to give us some electrons to maintain 50Hz, we will have no-charge electricity (because there won't be any)

unless it is 'sealed for life' or 'no user maintainable parts inside'
