Bring back the Birch

No I don't want to thrash anyone. (apart from Goredoom)

Does anyone know of a good timber merchant in the North of England who holds stocks of Birch. I want to make a couple of cupboard doors to match some birch furniture. I'll use birch ply for the panels, but I need something to make the stiles and rails.

I thought I might buy a bit of Birch Worktop and cut it up, but that appears to be unavailable at reasonable prices any more. Another alternative is to use ply for them too, and veneer the edges - fiddly.

Not sure how far your "North of England" extends geographically, but Hoghton Timber, near Preston have a wide selection of hardwoods and are quite happy to machine it to your dimensions in small quantities. I have bought Elm, Oak, Beech and Afromosia (Teak) from them in the past and found them very helpful. I'm sure they would have some Birch, so may be worth a phone call 01772 323566
