Breaking news!

My basic *no frills* mobile phone has been upgraded to a 4g capable Nokia 110.

Falling off your chairs laughing is not helpful.

Judging by the level of complex queries found on my search engine, the

*user guide* is not comprehensive:-(

First basic issue, how do you stop the key press pings? I know when I have pressed a key and don't need an audible indication:-(

I've found with my new phone Youtube has been more useful for instructions for enabling or disabling features that the official manual fails to mention.

Does this 'support' page help?

I imagine the feature you want to turn off is either under Personalise or Accessibility.

I have found that one.

I'll take a closer look at Profiles. Silent may offer more choices than off altogether!

Thanks. Early days and no APPS yet!

Silent kills button press pings. Remains to be heard if it also kills calls:-) Ta.

Can you get apps for it?

Sorry. I should have asked Mr G that question. I'm surprised to find that you can get all sorts of stuff for it.

Can't help with your query, but a friend has just been told that his what I think is a 2G phone, don't know the make, will soon cease to work. He is thinking he has to get a new phone at considerable expense to him (he's not rich), but was your upgrade simply a software/download thing, or did you get a new phone?

to get more than 2G, a new phone is needed. It's not a software issue. it's different frequencies, amongst other things.

Yes. Not somewhere I am rushing to go!

My Alcatel one touch was only 2G. Still usable but the hash key failed making text messaging impossible.

The Nokia was £39.99 at Argos and probably many other sources.

Ask around family and friends. Nearly all my phones have been *hand me downs* from other upgrading. He'll presumably need a matching SIM card.

The phone Tim bought costs £16 at Argos. Possibly less elsewhere. If bought at Argos, the customer also has to top it up with £10 worth of credit. So, the total outlay is £26.

Is your friend on a contract for his connection, or does he PAYG?

I too have bit the smart phone bullet and bought a Motorola Motog31 and under settings is a list of features, one of wwhich is Sound & Vibration which has options like "Dial Pad Tones on/off" etc.

Your phone must have something similar under Settings

So it may. There is a list of on/off tick boxes none of which are explained other than *suck it and see* methods.

Life is already too short for this sort of activity:-( the phone works, has 4G, I rarely text in company so the annoyance is mine alone.

Battery life looks good.

Strangely, Argos seem to have two identical versions of this phone. One is priced at £16.99 and the other at £39.99.

The cheaper one is branded Vodafone, and the buyer has to buy £10 worth of Vodafone credit (that they can use making calls, of course).

The more expensive one is sim-free and presumably no credit purchase is required.

There was a change in the law, and all phones now need to be provided unlocked.

We were handed down an 8GB Android phone, which is useless, as the operating system plus bloatware use up all the memory.

You're supposed to ask a four year old to adjust it for you.

Why does he think his 2G phone will stop working?

3G or 4G'Smart' phones are available from £60 or so; plenty below £100. He should be able to transfer his SIM to the new phone so the number will be the same and his contacts will go over if they are copied to the SIM.

I'd hazard a guess that there is a setting for sounds and haptics in the settings part of the phone. I'm assuming its android based. Brian

Don't buy a 3G phone now, minimum 4G.

3G networks in the UK are likely to start switching off in 2023, 2G might cling on until 2033.
