I have a 10yr old Bosch dishwasher. It still performs great but the powder/tablet dispenser lid now fails to lock in place. Normally this delays the release of the tablet for a short while after starting the wash.
I believe Bosch repairs must be done by a Bosch repair specialist, but as there are none in my area I feel the cost of calling in one would be prohibitive.
What is the reason for the delayed release? Can I get by with putting the tablet in with the crockery when I start the machine?
No, because there's a pre-rinse cycle.
Of course, you could open the machine mid-wash and add the tablet, but it rather defeats the object.
Untrue. I had my Bosch D/W mended a couple of times by an independent.
Well; faced with a (IIRC) a 3-figure sum for replacing the broken dispenser on our Bosch, that's exactly what we've been doing for the past few years, and the wash quality is fine.
Definitely worth trying yourself before deciding it's unacceptable, anyway.
Maybe the tablet lasts long enough before dissolving? Dunno.
Is the spring under the lid broken or dislodged? If it's dislodged, you may be able to hook it back up. I had to do this several times until the spring broke. I got a replacement lid with spring from a local appliance shop (I don't think it was too outrageously priced).
What model dishwasher is it?
I think that used to be the case but some independent ones will work on them now.
You could certainly try it & see if it works!
Had to change the spring and plastic bit on our old Bosch dw as well, suspect it's relatively common as the parts are easy to find ;)
I was just wondering what form the door lock takes and whether a quick fix could be done. These things tend to be pins through holes in plastic with a plastic spring to retain the thing first, and the plastic breaks and no retention, so a bit of thin ally of the right shape.... Note I did not suggest an angle grinder!

Easily fixable, parts cost about 12 quid for my Bosch (of a similar age).
Takes about 25 minutes first time you do it!
Let me know the model and I'll take a look to see if it's like ours.

For now,yes. It's not ideal but it will work well enough.
On mine, it's a shaped plastic lug on the sliding cover, and a similar lug on the end of a rotating shaft. The one on the shaft wears, and no longer 'catches'.
The fix is to replace the shaft, anbd while you're at it, the sealing washer and compression spring together with the lever on the other end of the shaft, which is hard to remove non-destructively. And the door spring since you get one of those as well!
They all came in the form of two little repair kits totalling about 8 quid plus carriage.
Finish do an auto dispenser that works with or without pre rinse. They work fine but they cost too much to use IMO.
The cartridge rotates when the hot water has been used to allow the next wash to be done. the detergent is held in by some sort of heat resistant plug so it doesn't release on the rinse.
New lid didn't fix mine. See other post.
The post about the "shaped lug" &c.? Does the dispenser in yours look quite diferent from that one, or was some the dispenser itself (not just the spring or lid) broken?

Pretty well the same. The bit on the bottom of the lid (which hadn't worn badly) engages with a lug on the rotating blue thing you can see towards the ewnd of the video. The blue thing, its shaft and seal, and the lever behind it, is what I replaced.
Clearly both parts wear, but I found replacing the lid didn't fix it.
I fixed my own. It's easy to buy the parts.

Hi all. Thanks to everyone who replied. I?ll try to cover all the points mentioned.
The machine is Bosch model no. SGS5332 GB. The dispenser is the same type as shown in the ?youtube? link given by Adam Funk. The spring is intact and the problem was that the cover would not stay closed. When I finally did get it to close, the slightest jarring caused it to open again.
There is a small nib at each corner of the cover and they run in 2 channels. I figured that as I slid the cover to the left the nibs dropped down indentations at the bottom of the channels and that is what held the cover closed. When it was time to be opened, the blue arm would rotate and by cam action would lift the nibs clear of the indentations.
So the nibs had probably worn. I tried to reform them using cyno glue, and then using Araldite, but neither of those materials withstood the hot water and detergent. Finally, I made a suitably shaped plate from aluminium and riveted it to the cover with 1mm copper wire. That has lasted for about 3months but the problem is now back. I think it is now due to wear on the indents in the channels, but I cannot get at them so I am stuck.
I had not thought about a rinse cycle until it was mentioned, so I started up the machine and stood by it. Sure enough, after about 15mins the (cold) water was pumped out and the machine refilled.
So it looks like I need a complete new unit (any suggestions as from where). The alternatives are waiting 15 minutes and dispense the tablets manually, or get a new machine (a pity because it is good otherwise).
