"fee paying" meaning fee paying schools, which account for about 5% of the school population, yet 50% of Oxbridge is from "fee paying" schools. Seems out of balance eh?

I doubt it Maxie. The old fatties always say that.

The standard has not gone down.

Maxie, you are at it again. You are now on about beacons. When will you stop?

Maybe you are just very intelligent?

Wake up at the back and look at your glorious leader

Would you like to back that up with something, e.g. facts ?

My son's "A" level physics course had a lot less depth than when I did mine and his final year project (he got a 2.1) might have struggled to make a pass compared to when I was at university

Yes, ours has an 'A' rated cycle.

AFAICS it does it by not heating (or if it does, just warming it a bit) the air. So of course the drying cycle runs for ages (about 8 hours for a load)- I do use this sometimes and this in itself isn't an issue for me. But I wonder about the extra wear and tear on motor, bearings, belt etc.

Did you actually _read_ that page? It lists 'university', and indicates that the plural is 'universities'.

Very odd, indeed.

Yup you are right it does, although it also has the "unconventional" (i.e. wrong) spelling I used as an entry point. It is also in the Mozilla UK English dictionary. Not suggesting it ought to be - just found it odd that it was.

It's easy with freezers and suchlike - but I've seen "energy rating" on incandescent light bulbs - I would thought WRT these a light bulb is a light bulb is a light bulb. However, perhaps the thickness of the filament varies, or something.

Me, I'd wonder about the extra wear and tear on the clothes.

Any proof of this, or is this just inane ramblings?

Take a look at GCSE and A level exam papers and compare with those of a generation ago. The fall in standards is depressingly obvious.
