For those like you that ask this sort of question I'd say 1/2 inch would be more than enough,

I was in an Aldi's a couple of days ago. Lots of melons on offer, but nary a piel de sapo. Just because they advertise them on their website doesn't mean that they can supply them at any given time, as anyone who has shopped for groceries on-line will tell you.

I wonder why that is.
Yes, it's getting towards the end of the season now, but when we were in Spain in late August a few years ago (too hot for us - the temperature hit 40 C one day) there were still plenty of piel de sapo in the supermarkets. That's probably when I developed my liking for them. My problem is that I haven't seen any at all this year.
I was in Waitrose and there they were.
