Bamboo worktop

I'm looking at bamboo worktop for our soon to be new kitchen. It looks good, and is even a bit cheaper than wood, but is it difficult to work? Any recommended suppliers?

Anyone used it?

No one who survived to tell the tale, I'd guess. What a strange idea! How are you supposed to keep a surface like that clean and sterile?

I can't see the problem here. It's a good solid material when made into a flat 'plank' (for want of a better word).

I like the way the edges have a sort of marquetry effect, and it's said to need less maintenance than wood.

AIUI bamboo is the hardest wood that you can get for flooring ( I have excluded english oak) with great impact resistance. I'd expect it to be the first choice in funtion terms, however sealing it would be a challenge I think.

Rock maple?

Used for dance floors.

Also some of the ebony and lignum vitae types, but oh the cost...
