B22 LED *dimmable* bulbs for touch-sensitive bedside lamps (probably leading-edge dimmer)

I gather that dimmable LED bulbs usually have to be used with trailing-edge dimmers rather that the older leading-edge ones which were designed for tungsten bulbs that don't care about leading/trailing.



We have some bedside lamps which have touch-sensitive on/off at various dimming settings. They are *probably* leading-edge as they were bought before LED bulbs became available. Are there any LED bulbs (B22 fitting) which would work with those dimmers? It would be a shame to have to buy new touch-sensitive lamps because they dimmers won't work with LED. We need LED because a) they are cheaper to run, and b) they won't overheat if left on accidentally by ageing parents ;-) The shades are well ventilated (not enclosed) so heating of the electronics in normal use of the bulb is not an issue.

Ordinary Leading edge dimmers do work with LEDs but they tend to buzz on the dim (low light) setting and, sometimes, the low setting can be too high. Some have pots to adjust the low setting.

I?m not familiar with the touch sensitive ones - I know the principle etc but haven?t tried one - there is no obvious reason AFAIK they shouldn?t be as good/bad as ordinary leading edge ones.

I never had any luck with touch sensitive anything, lamps room switches even tv channel switches. They seem to have a mind of their own, in the case of table lamps even lightning set them off etc. I guess its because they have to use a high impedance touch plate, many of them also exhibited a buzzy feeling when touched, electro static charge? I now have none but one on a portable radio that seems to work OK. Brian

I've a couple of the touch sensitive switch lamps - decent range of dimming but they do buzz a little on the lower settings.

For that application and the cost difference I would be inclined to use a lower wattage standard filament bulb. They are still available on Amazon (or rather were last time I looked Google "rough service").

You might have to buy them a dozen at a time...

I doubt if anyone has bothered to do an LED mains bulb that can cope with a leading edge dimmer. Even the ones that claim to work with trailing edge dimmers seem inclined to fail with monotonous regularity.

I have a very green friend who blows them up whilst still under warrantee. The dimmer maker blames the LED and vice versa. However, under the contract terms one or both have to replace the failing units. Both are high end components from a well known dealer.

It has been going on since before lockdown. I have lost count of how many times each component has been replaced. He may be just unlucky. (he always did have a bad effect on photocopiers)

The buzzy feeling is because they tigger by receiving a low 50Hz current from your finger.
