Ally or stainless worktop trim ...

Does anyone know where I can get 'hockey stick' profile aluminium or stainless steel trim, such as worktop end cheeks are made from, in lengths longer than the standard 600mm sold in plastic packets in the DIY barns? Ideally, I need to find a supplier of the basic metal stock, before the worktop accessory manufacturers get their hands on it, and chop it up into worktop-width pieces. I need it to cover a depth of 37mm, so the stuff for

38mm worktops would be ideal. Maximum length pieces needed are a touch over 1200mm. Can't find any reference to the stuff on t' net.

I did Don. It throws up thousands of hits that lead you endlessly down alleyways which fetch up at 'directory' type search engines - and I'm sure that you've been there ... I've tried every combination of wording and phrasing that I can think of, to try to narrow it to a more specific product line.

I have had one company come back to me to ask me how much I am looking for, but unless they have such an item in stock, and are figuring on just 'helping me out' with a small quantity, I suspect it's going to be that I need to either buy a km of the stuff, or have them custom make it >:-(

I can't believe that a profile used so commonly by kitchen accessory manufacturers to make 38mm worktop end caps, is so difficult to source in raw lengths. It can't all be custom product, can it ?

Have a look at

formatting link
& check out the 'mouldings' section of their online catalogue. SPA 285, SPA 287 , SPA 294 or SPA 295 look like the sort of profile you need & they come in 4m lengths.

Well I'll be blowed. Did you know of this company, or did you find them for me ? I certainly never came across them in my searches. The hockey stick mouldings are not wide enough for what I need, but the double feather edge is, and that might be an option with a slightly revised fixing scheme. It's a site that you have to register with, and once you have, you can then get access to the 'enquiries' section, which is necessary to be able to get a price. It then asks for required quantities and what sort of "finish" you require, with a number of options. That starts to sound a bit 'custom', but I guess that they might just stock it in all the options. Anyways, I have submitted an enquiry, so we'll see what comes back. Thanks for the link. Much appreciated.

I just googled "aluminium extrusion stockists uk" & it was listed in the third listing. I've never heard of them, we normally used aalco

are nationwide & they supplied us when I worked in the stores at Bae, but I not sure if they have 'minimum' orders.

But at least you know now what the technical terms are now. Have you tried the local metal stockholders in your area?

Strange. That's just about exactly one of the search strings that I used, except using the Google option "Pages from the UK" rather than specifying "UK" as part of the string. Aalco came up a number of times, but didn't carry what I was looking for. We have a couple of metal stockholders in the area, and come to think of it, one is an ally specialist, that I have used in the past for rod for antenna construction.

I'll perhaps try to pop down and see them in the next couple of days. Wouldn't it be just typical, if the answer was right on your doorstep ... ? :-)

Which BAe site were you at ? I used to visit a few of them servicing the computer graphics equipment in the CAD departments.

That's usually the way of things. Some do tend to stock the more 'exotic' profiles depending on their clientel (Shopfitters etc.)

I started as an apprentice with Hawker Diddly in Brough, worked at Stevenage for a while...then back to Brough until I joined the real world! ;-)

Ah! Towards the end of the service life of the machines, when I was handling the repair contracts on my own, I used to be down at the Stevenage site probably twice a week. I also used to get up to Brough fairly regularly, but as an assistant to the guy who looked after the particular machine type that they had on that site. Happy days ...
