A challenge for old house lovers

As the sole original purpose of the EU was to put, and keep, the lid on German expansion plans in that respect alone it has proven to be successful, so far.

No, they're made at Hambach in France (well it's in France at the moment) between Metz and Strasbourg.

ObJoke:

Q: "Why do the roads in France have trees along the sides?"

A: "So that the German army can march in the shade"

I believe that Smart racing on real race tracks is becoming popular. Why I don't know - as inexplicable as the Dutch enthusiasm for dragging several tons of scrap iron up a 100m sand track with a towing vehicle with a Mig 29 engine on it. (Or even worse Dutch bicycle "racing" on an oval circuit when both participants stand still while the commentator becomes apoplectic).

Hah - ideal vehicle for Paris - Polycarbonate body :-).

When parked at right angles to the BMW's it didn't stick out into the road. It really is a superb city car.

Wenn wir fahren Wenn wir fahren. Wenn wir fahren In dem Engeland, dem Engeland.

So why were the krauts so keen to come over here then, eh? And why do so many of them clutter up Italy?

I can't believe anyone praising German sausage or German food of any description. It's processed muck that's even worse than the food sold in the UK.

How many generations do you think were lost in World War II? I make it one, possibly three maximum but not all of them, obviously.

Is three a "huge number"? Is this something one learns on an "honours degree" course?

Hmm - does that make it as bad as a Renault or as good as a Peugeot ?

On seeing the width of next door's new BMW 3 series yesterday I bet an old style VW Golf could go in sideways and still be hidden !

Odd thing was they claimed to need "living room" yet once they got it in the EU all they really wanted were the beaches of Italy, Spain and Greece.

It's people like you with your sentiments who have helped bring about the collapse of societal cohesion and the concomitant rise in antisocial behaviour in the United Kingdom. Just think for a moment what you're wishing for. Nearly all local shops will have disappeared by 2020. We will have little choice and few alternatives, as the big multiples want to concentrate on a few large-volume lines. We are already losing expertise in butchery, horticulture and dairy where in just a couple of decades we would have to import those skills from Eastern Europe. And without the local shops to support a community, villages and towns will increasingly just be crime-ridden dormitories where kids rule because they and their parents have utterly no commitment to preserving anything. Your selfishness, because you're incapable or unwilling to bend a little to fit the community, rather than insisting that the community bend to suit you, will ultimately be of detriment to you, too.

correction: I don't live in MK, but would not complain at all living there. It is very attractive in many ways.

Well yes!

Transport could be arranged. I am sure that someone here would be prepared to ride shotgun.

Sigh. It's behind you.

Something different from home, which is generally the reason why anybody travels on leisure.

... and why do so many Britons clog up the coast line of Spain and the Ballearic islands?

That depends on what you buy and from where you buy it.

It's strange how perceptions influence markets. I have a colleague in Germany with one of the high end Peugeots - can't remember which one. It seems to be a pretty nice car (although I am not a car expert), but they are very much cheaper in Germany than anywhere else because they don't otherwise sell.

Have you missed the last 25 years or something ? We would all like to spend time lazing around but the UK is competing in a global economy. Yes there are side effects and those need to be dealt with - strictly - but opting out isn't an option as the Jaguar factory has just found out. Work harder or work not at all.

Odd - sheep from farmland I own seem to get to market quite efficiently thank you. As do beef cows from across the valley. Dairy is in crisis as there is a world glut of milk and no demand but that's not the fault of large or small shops. In any case importing skills is not that bad, Tony B seems to use it to justify allowing all the illegals to stay all the time.

Because shops open on Sunday?? (and Saturday - which they don't in Germany). Bit extreme don't you think?

"Local" shops never gave an alternative - you had a choice of take it or leave it on a _very_ limited number of (usually) time expired items.

So who made my Aberdeen Angus steak, which I couldn't buy from a local butcher?

Whatever you are smoking I want some. Since when did "local shops" support a community and give kids something to do in the evening?

No, your stupidity.

Shops need to be open 27/7 because two people need to work to pay the mortgage. Only 8% of families have the wife at home full time anymore. The root cause stems back to land, which we have a surplus, and the artificial building land shortage created by greedy large landowners backed up by a planning system. This raises house prices to silly levels. All this stress leads to many problems in people and families.

Sounds odd that land and its use is responsible, but very true.

Blame land. Sounds odd as propaganda has had it the problem has always been something else.

It is now. 30, 20 years ago it was not. On the Continent it is a day of leisure. People go to football games, restaurants, etc. Not sit in all bloody day as the Brits did/do.

It means smart work, not hard work.
