Correction, Serge, your Latvian butler / driver gets the RR out and drives you around in it. Not to the bank to collect your FIT profits though, that you do in the EV as it's more annoying to your neighbours (who help pay for it all).

The incoming cable is about 100 years old. 60 A was more than enough for anybody then. If I neeeded an electric car charging point it could be fed off the other incoming phase - unused at present.

Our average loading is just over 1 kW. Excluding the E7 but even including that the average is still only 3 kW. The snag of course is that for 7 hours (ish) we pull the best part of 10 kW, yes the 16 mm^2 E7 tails do get warm. The 35 mm^2 incomer doesn't...

If overnight charging of EV's at home does become common place then it may well start to get "interesting", anything from finding poor underground joints to substation protection tripping or transformer fires.

Thanks for the above link. I was trying to work out the range extend capability of the couple of chargers I saw on a motorway service station last week but to no avail. They were remarkably vague about the power levels only that pacemaker users should stand well back.

How does the actual range on a fully charged (or 80% charged) battery compare with the from new range and specification after a year or two of regular use? Talking here mileages around 300/week?

Beryllium oxide heat sinks, especially when damaged or machined, release highly toxic inhalable dust, and there are restrictions on the use of the oxide. Mainly used in hermetically sealed semiconductor assemblies.

Recent research into EV battery, specifically the Nissan Leaf's going back to 2012 shows battery aging is considerably less than originally thought. An average use battery being useable for typically 20 years. The expired battery packs will also have considerable resale value, both as downgraded batteries and for scrap. We have a 2 year old Zoe which still achieves 200 miles on a charge in the summer months, no noticable degradation so far.

EV fuel consumption under normal driving varies from around 2.5 miles per kWh for upper end SUV type tanks such as Jag Ipace and Audi etron, to 4.5 miles per kWh or more for Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe etc. This includes powering all the electrics, heating, aircon etc etc. Regen is also included in the above figures. Regen is NOT just another sales talk item - depending on the terrain it will have considerable effect on achievable range. Instead of chucking your kinetic energy into heat in the brakes to slow down, it is used to recharge the battery. A side effect is that brake wear is much lower, another cost benefit.

A 13 amp getting hot is often down to a poor fuse connection. If you have one that does, try cleaning the fuse and contacts, making sure they give a tight fit.

You really should ditch that Perkins engine and get something a bit more modern.

Similarly here when I fitted a new CU, I upgraded the tails from 16+6mm to 25+16mm, the next time the meter was changed the chap noticed and upgraded the fuse from 60A to 100A (or was it 80A? can't remember)

I'm now looking at getting a new supply in for a new build and Western Power's standard offering for a domestic supply is max 15kW (about 65A) seems a bit short sighted with electric car charging in future ... maybe I should tell them I'm going to install a GSHP, even though I'll probably go with bulk LPG.

When the GF's boiler was condemned she was given a brand new fan heater to keep her going (council house). It had a tilt switch built into it (the cat attacked it and knocked it over). And because she used it she is allowed to keep it as it costs more to have it PAT tested and passed on to someone else that it does to buy a new one!!

As an aside to this I have been working in a HMO in Watford.

There was a stipulation that if the CH is not available 24/7 an oil filled heater must be made available for anyone that wants one.

That's the wrong way around!

You need mirrors to reflect the sunlight back to the earth so that the solar panel work at night.

You may even need a different type of RCD to type A.

And never install type A RCDs upstream of type AC RCDs.
