We’ve dealt with our sewer backing up twice in two weeks, wich is a nightmare when you just moved in. I finally got a crew to dig up the yard and see what was going on since the house is only three years old. Turns out, there was a massive separation in the line, but that wasn't even the wildest part of what they found. The original installers must have run out of pipe beacuse they slapped together this zigzagging mess of fittings instead of using a proper sweep. It’s just a stack of elbows and short pieces all glued together with purple primer to make a wierd curve. My plumber was basially speechless. It explains why we had such a bad belly in the line and why everthing was catching right there. I'm just relieved to have it replaced with a solid, straight run. It feels good to know I won't be worrying about the drains every time someone takes a shower now. If you're buying a newer place, get a scope done, because you never know what kind of hack job is buried under the dirt.

I had a similar nightmare with my 2019 build last spring. We kept getting a slow drain in the guest bath, and when I finally rented a Ridgid SeeSnake to check it out, I found a literal "S" curve made of 45-degree elbows buried six feet down. Like you, it looked like the guys just used whatever scrap was left in the truck that Friday afternoon instead of a long-sweep 90.
The worst part for us was that they didn't even use proper bedding. They just threw the native rocky soil right back on top of the Schedule 40 PVC, wich eventually crushed a section near the cleanout. I ended up having to hand-dig a four-foot trench becasue the mini-excavator couldn't get between my AC condenser and the fence. Swapping it out for a continuous run and backfilling with pea gravel made all the difference. You're spot on about the scope—I tell all my neighbors to spend the $200 on a camera inspection before their builder warranty expires.
I had a different situation where the fittings were actually correct, but the backfill was a total disaster. When we dug up our main line last October, the pipe itself was Schedule 40 PVC, but the installers hadn't used any gravel or sand bedding. They just threw the native clay right back on top of it. Over just four years, the weight of that heavy clay, combined with a wet winter, caused the pipe to settle unevenly. It created a three-foot belly that acted like a permanent trap. Even with a Fernco coupling holding the joints together, the pitch was so off that we were getting backups every time we ran the dishwasher and the washing machine at once.
It’s easy to blame the laziness with scrap parts, but sometimes it's the invisible stuff like compaction that ruins a job. We ended up replacing about fifteen feet of line and making sure the new run sat on a solid six-inch bed of pea gravel. It’s been six months of clear drains since we fixed the foundation issues, not just the pipe.
While the 'S' curve is a classic indicator of a Friday afternoon rush, I’ve often observed that these installers fail to differentiate between pressure-rated fittings and proper DWV long-turn sweeps, leading to excessive frictional head loss. It’s particularly egregious when they neglect the required 1/4-inch per foot slope because they’re trying to work around footer overdig, wich usually results in the exact type of hydraulic jump that initiates a 'belly' regardless of the pipe material used. Did your plumber check the actual grade with a transit or just eyeball the level? Even a minor deviation in that 'weird curve' could have fundamentally compromised the scouring velocity of the effluent.
Spot on. Those frankenstein-style fittings are total debris traps. One thing people often overlook in these hack jobs is the primer application. If they were rushing enought to use scrap elbows, they probaly puddled the purple primer inside the hub. I've seen it actualy soften the PVC wall so much that it creates a 'bead' or ridge on the inside of the joint, wich catches hair and waste just as fast as the bad angle does. It's a clog waiting to happen even if the slope is somehow right.
That zigzagging is definatly ugly, but have you ruled out the possibility of a major soil shift or settling after the install? I've seen situations where the original run was decent, but poor compaction caused a joint to pull apart, and then a previous 'repair' guy is the one who actualy hacked in that mess of elbows to bridge the gap. It's easy to blame the original builder, but I’d be curious if there was any sign of a previous patch job or if that purple primer looked significantly fresher than the rest of the line.
