Finally figured out why my Samsung fridge kept freezing over

I spent the entire weekend tearing apart my RF28 and I think I finally understand why these things have such a bad reputation. It turns out the drain tube design is just prone to icing up, wich eventually kills the fan and makes the whole unit sound like a lawnmower. I ended up installing a longer copper clip on the defrost heater to reach further down into the drain hole. It feels like a small win, but it is ridiculous that I had to perform surgery on a four-year-old machine just to keep it from leaking all over my hardwood floors. I honestly thougth I was just unlucky til I talked to the local repair guy who stopped by to drop off a part. He told me he spends half his week fixing the exact same sensor and drainage issues on these models. It is a shame becasue the interface and the lighting inside are actualy top-notch, but the actual mechanical engineering is just disappointing. If you are dealing with that annoying clicking sound or ice buildup under the deli drawer, definatly check the secondary heater loop before you call it quits and buy a new one.


I went thru the exact same headache with my RF28 last summer. That copper clip trick helps for a few months, but in my case, the ice eventually found a way to bridge over it anyway. I ended up having to buy an aftermarket heating probe that actualy wraps around the defrost loop and sits three inches deep into the drain hole. It’s a messy job, but it was the only way to stop the water from pooling under the pantry drawer and freezing the door shut every three days. My local tech also suggested checking the duckbill valves behind the rear access panel. On mine, they were completly gunked up with some wierd slime, wich caused the backup in the first place. I just snipped the tips off the rubber valves to let the water flow more freely. It is wild that we have to spend our Saturday mornings acting like amateur refrigeration engineers just becasue a multi-billion dollar company couldn't design a simple gravity drain correctly. If you're still getting that jackhammer sound from the fan hitting ice, check the foam insulation behind the twin cooling panel; once that gets waterlogged, it is a nightmare to dry out.

I had the same icing issue on my RF23 model, but before I started bending copper wire, I realized my fridge wasn't tilted back quite enought. I used a level to make sure the front feet were high enough so gravity coud actualy help that condensate move toward the back. It sounds minor, but if the unit is perfectly level or leaning forward even a hair, that water just sits in the tray and freezes before it can even think about hitting the drain hole.

I also found that keeping the humidity control on the deli drawer at a medium setting helped quite a bit. It seems like when I had it on the highest moisture setting, the coils just couldn't keep up during the defrost cycle. I haven't seen a drop of water under my crisper bins in over fourteen months now. It might not be a permanent fix for every unit, but it saved me from having to pull the back panel off and risk cracking those fragile plastic clips.

You guys are learning the hard way. Back in my day, an old Kenmore whould run twenty years and all you ever did was vacuum the coils once a year. These Samsung units are basially fancy computers that happen to stay cold. I've seen that ice buildup warp the thin plastic liners if you let it go too long. If you've alredy got it apart, grab some aluminum foil tape and seal the edges of that back panel tight. The factory seal is usally junk. If moist air leaks in, that copper clip won't mean a lick. I miss when a defrost cycle was just a simple mechanical clock and a heater that acutally worked.

You're spot on about the duckbill valves and that foam insulation nightmare. One thing a lot of people overlook while they have that back panel off is the actual drain tube grommets. The original ones have such a narrow opening that they trap a tiny bead of water right at the tip due to surface tension, which is exactly where the flash-freezing starts. If you replace them with the updated 'V' style grommets Samsung eventually put out, it helps the water break tension and actually drop through. It's a tiny five-dollar part, but without it, even the best heater loop can struggle to keep that exit point clear.
