I’ve been staring at those dark triangular and circular things hanging on the overhead lines for months, especally since the lines run about twenty feet from my backyard here in the East Bay. I finally got a chance to talk to a lineman working near my block yesterday and got the full rundown on what they actualy do. Turns out they aren't just decorative or some kind of wierd sensor; they’re actually cable spacers designed to keep the lines from slapping togather when the wind kicks up off the bay. It makes so much sense now that I know. Without those spacers, those long spans of wire woud be a total mess during a storm, and since we're so close to the houses, that would be a massive hazard. He mentioned they're basially there to maintain specific geometry between the phases. It’s one of those things you never notice til you’re sitting on your porch wondering why your power doesn't flicker every time there's a breeze. Glad I finally cleared that up beacuse it was driving me crazy not knowing.

I had a similar realization after the winter storms we had last year. There's a set of Hendrix spacers on the primary line behind my garage, and I used to think they were some kind of high-tech insulators for a transformer setup. Seeing them in action during a 40mph gust is something else, though. The way they keep those three phases in that tight diamond configuration is pretty clever engineering when you consider how much weight is actually pulling on that steel messenger wire.
The crew that came out to trim the trees around my property called it a "spacer cable" system. They told me it lets the utility run lines through much tighter spaces without needing the massive crossarms you see on standard poles. In my neighborhood, the trees are so dense that without those brackets, we’d be losing power every time a branch even looked at the wires. It’s definitely a relief knowing they’re there to stop the lines from arcing out over our roof.
I've noticed a slightly different aspect of those spacer cable systems compared to the traditional crossarm setups. My brother-in-law works for PG&E and explained that those spacers are often part of a system that uses a heavy-duty messenger wire at the very top. The messenger wire actually carries the physical tension and weight of the entire span, which allows the utility to run lines through much tighter spaces or areas with heavy tree canopy without needing as much horizontal clearance as bare wire. In my neighborhood, they swapped the old open-wire setup for these spacers after a big oak branch took out the secondary lines three years ago. Because the wires are covered in that high-density polyethylene insulation and held in that tight bundle, they can actually survive a branch resting on them for a while without shorting out or causing a fire. It’s a huge relief during the summer months when we’re worried about sparks. It’s less about just wind for us and more about surviving the vegetation that the city refuses to trim back properly.
Seen plenty of those Hendrix systems go up over the years. Back in my day, we spent half our lives squaring up 8-foot crossarms just to get the clearance we needed. You’d have massive separation between phases to stop the slapping, and one heavy ice storm whould still bring the whole mess down. These spacers are a godsend for tight easements, but I still remember when we just used porcelain spools and bare copper. Finding a pinhole leak in that covered wire can be a real headache compared to the old stuff, though. Once that insulation breaks down, it’ll track right across the spacer and keep you guessing all night.
Update: I took another look after reading about that messenger wire. I see exactly what you mean now—it’s that heavy-duty line at the very top of the bracket. Is that wire also meant to protect the lower lines from lightning strikes, or is it purely for structural support? It definitely looks a lot cleaner than those bulky crossarms. I’m surprised more neighborhoods don’t switch to this setup given our winds.
