I had a reputable company install a 50-amp Square D Homeline breaker into my Eaton panel for a new hot tub. Everything seems to be working fine, but another electrician stopped by for an estimate on some other stuff and told me that mixing brands like that is a code violation becuase the panel isn't listed for it. The original company is coming back to put in an Eaton BR breaker, but I’m genuinely curious if this is a real safety concern or just a technicality. The disconnect box for the hot tub itself is Square D, so even when I switch the main breaker to Eaton, I’ll still have diffrent brands in the chain. Does it actualy matter if the components are different brands as long as they are compatible in theory? I've seen plenty of panels with a mix of stuff over the years, and it makes me wonder if people are just being overly cautious or if there's a specific mechanical reason the bus bars won't play nice together long-term. I’d love to hear from people who have seen how these mixed setups hold up over time. Is it just about passing inspection, or have you guys actually seen damage from using a different brand breaker that happened to fit the slot?

I have seen plenty of older service panels where someone just shoved whatever was on the shelf at the hardware store into the bus. While a Square D Homeline breaker might physically clip onto an Eaton BR bus bar, the tension on those metal stabs isn't identical. Over a decade or more, I have pulled covers where a "compatible" breaker had clearly been running hotter than its neighbors, eventually leading to some light pitting on the bus.
The disconnect being Square D is a non-issue becuase the breaker inside that box matches the enclosure's specific listing. The real concern is that point of contact in your main panel. If an inspector sees that mismatch, they will flag it because the manufacturer didn't test that combination for a UL listing. It is mostly about liability and insurance, but that tiny difference in metallurgy can cause a high-resistance connection under a heavy 50-amp load. Getting the Eaton BR swapped in is the right move for peace of mind.
Everyone gets hung up on the brand name on the face of the breaker, but the industry acutally makes components designed to be interchangeable. If you look at the Eaton CL line, those are specifically UL Classified to go into Square D, GE, and Siemens panels. The code violation arguement usally ignores that these parts are tested by third parties to ensure the trip curve and the tension on the bus stabs meet the original panel's specs. Regarding your disconnect box, having a Square D enclosure fed by an Eaton panel isn't just okay—it's standard practice. You aren't mixing anything in a dangerous way there; they are seperate pieces of equipment. I’ve wired plenty of jobs where the main service is Siemens and the remote hot tub disconnect is a Square D QO or Homeline. As long as the breaker matches the bus it’s physically clipped to, the rest of the chain doesn't matter.
The real issue is people using a standard Homeline in an Eaton BR panel without it being the Classified version. While they look the same, the CL series undergoes specific testing that the standard ones don't. It's more of a paperwork and listing issue than a safety disaster, but if you want to be strictly legal, just stick with the BR or a properly rated CL breaker.
Look, a HOM250 might slide onto a BR bus, but the jaw tension is calibrated for Square D’s specific bus plating. When you're pulling 40A continuous for a hot tub, that thermal cycling is going to work a loose connection even looser. I’ve swapped out plenty of toasted BR bus bars because someone thought a '1-inch is a 1-inch' rule applied. Stick with the BR250. It’s cheap insurance compared to a $2,000 service change because you pitted the bus. Plus, if you ever have a fire, insurance adjusters look for that HOM label in a BR panel faster than anything else.
I don't know much about the science here, but if the breaker still trips when it's supposed to, is the bus bar damage the only real danger? Or coud a bad fit acutally cause a fire even if the breaker stays on? Also, how do you even check if a breaker is getting too hot without touching it? I'm worried I wouldn't notice a problem untill somethig actually stops working.
