What is this breaker?

Hi All,



Since getting new electrical panel breakers when I got my standby generator installed, two of my electric panel's breakers -- one on one of my air conditioner and one on the other air conditioner -- trip when ever the electrical service has a glitch, such as changing grids during an thunderstorm. This was not the case with my old breaker panel.



This is the writing of one of these 15A breaker (old ones were also 15A):

Can anyone point me to the spec's on this (other than 15 Amp)?



I am looking for fast blow, slow blow, etc..

Aren't the guys who installed the new panels or the generator supposed to fix this for free? Or if they're stubborn, short of suing them, get them to diagnose it for free or at least explain it to you for free.

HCAR means it can handle heating and air conditioning, refrigeration with the surge from compressor starting.

SWD is switching duty.

It is proper for the AC but I don't know about switching grids and what is going on there.

HOM makes it a Square-D Homeline brand. They are the lowest-end breakers available from Square-D; the Square-D QO breakers are higher quality, but require a different breaker box "backplane" bus layout.

This is a long shot but does the HVAC unit have a surge suppressor on it?

I *had* a surge suppressor power strip that would occasionally trip a

120v 15 amp breaker.

I wonder if it was made in (Communist) China. That would explain things.

Do you know of a source of American Made breakers?

Direct plug in to the wall. The plug does have a ground fault interrupter as part of the plug -- test button and all.

It is a "square D", which are supposedly made in America.

I know some were made in Mexico. You can say there were Central American Made.

If this is your breaker model, then its datasheet shows made in the US.

Definitely. They try to make cheap crap that will break soon so that they can ruin their own reputation and lower their sales.

And they succeed too. That's why sales of Chinese-made stuff has gone down for decades. Oh, wait.....

Same people that make APC UPS power supplies.

A brand name would have been nice - apparently SquareD - Homeline. As Ed wrote, HCAR is appropriate. (SWD is if you use the breaker to switch loads, like turn off warehouse lights.)

2 window air conditioners? Connect to receptacle? 15A plug? General circuits (multiple receptacles)? Is there other stuff running on the same circuits? Do you have the same number of breakers (might the contractor have doubled-up circuits)?

Two yes. But not window units. Two hose portable AC's that exhaust out windows.

Connected to a 15 A receptacle.

Each air conditioner is on a different circuit with their own breakers

The old breaker did not have this issue.

When I have some better information. I asked Square D if they have a better breaker. i amwaiting for them to get back

Trip is not when switching to generator or back?

I doubt Homeline has any different breakers (they have a breaker with 2 circuits on one device that is unlikely to be better).

As Scott wrote, Homeline is a 'competitive' line from SquareD, but SquareD is a good company and I would expect Homeline breakers would not have a problem.

I get very few "glitches" - maybe a couple a year. You probably don't get many, which makes testing difficult. If one of the units is near a kitchen or dining room you might try connecting to a 20A appliance circuit that doesn't have anything on it except when cooking - see if it still trips

Usually a glitch from the power company. One time going off generator back on to utility power.

Only one breaker at a time. Not both at once. They kinds of take turns.

Every other time is was a grid switch (the stand by system was not involved).

We get a lot of thunderstorms this time of year. A lot of grid switching.

I just learned that my issue is called "nuisance tripping". The solution, which does not seems right, is to replace the HCAR breaker with a standard breaker.

From my research, nuisance tripping is an issue with HCAR breakers. They are not suppose to, but do anyway
