I've been scratching my head over a circuit that suddenly dropped down to only 30 volts across every outlet. My tester was throwing back some realy wierd readings, specifically a HOT / GRD REV fault, wich had me worried about a major wiring fail inside the walls. The red fault light on the device was definitly a bad sign. I started at the panel and worked my way down the line, checking every terminal for tightness and looking for any signs of heat damage. I eventually found a hidden junction box where a wire nut had come loose, causing a partial connection that was barely letting any current through. It was basicly a high-resistance bridge that was dropping the voltage before it even reached the rooms. Re-stripping the wires and getting a solid mechanical connection fixed everything instantly. Huge relief to have the power back to normal without having to call in an expensive pro for something that ended up being a simple fix.

I had a similar nightmare last summer with a bedroom circuit that suddenly wouldn't power a simple lamp. My Klein ET310 was giving me those same nonsensical "Open Neutral" and "Hot/Ground Reversed" readings. When I put my multimeter on it, I was seeing about 45 volts. It’s wild how a bad connection can mimic a major wiring disaster. In my case, it wasn't a hidden box but one of those cheap "back-stabbed" receptacles behind the master bed. The constant vibration from a small fan must have finally loosened the tension on the hot wire. It wasn't fully disconnected, just barely touching, creating enought resistance to kill the voltage but enough continuity to confuse the tester. I ended up swapping out all the old outlets on that run for some decent commercial-grade Leviton ones. Using the side screws instead of the push-in connectors makes such a difference for long-term reliability. Finding a hidden junction box like you did is a lucky break; those are usally the hardest things to track down when you're troubleshooting a voltage drop.
I ran into a nearly identical voltage drop last year, but my issue ended up being outside the house. My Fluke 117 was showing around 40 volts on one leg, but when I turned on the microwave, the lights on that circuit woud acutally get brighter while other rooms dimmed. It was incredibly disorienting becuase my Sperry plug-in tester was cycling thru three diferent fault codes depending on what was plugged in.
Instead of a loose wire nut in a junction box, the culprit was a corroded neutral connection at the service mast where the utility lines meet the house. Rain had been seeping into the weatherhead for years, and the aluminum wire had oxidized so badly it wasn't making a clean path back to the transformer. It created a floating neutral situation that could have fried my electronics if I hadn't caught it. If you ever see those low voltages accompanied by lights flickering when a heavy load kicks in, definitely check the main lugs or call the power company to check their side before tearing into the interior walls.
Classic high-impedance fault. I’ve seen this happen way too often with those generic tan wire nuts that don't have a live-action spring. I strictly use the Ideal Twister 341s now—they bite into the copper and stay put. If you ever run into this again and can't find the box, grab an Ideal 61-534 SureTest. It’ll actually put a 12, 15, or 20-amp load on the circuit to measure the specific voltage drop under pressure. Standard multimeters draw so little current that they’ll read phantom voltage all day long. Glad you caught that hidden box; usally, those are buried behind drywall and require a Greenlee CS-8000 to track down.
You're spot on about those hidden boxes being a total pain to locate. I've dealt with those high-resistance bridges before and one thing people often overlook is the oxidation on the wire itself after it's been arcing like that. Even if the connection feels tight after you twist it back, I always make sure to snip back to fresh, shiny copper. If you leave that blackened or pitted section in the new nut, you're just inviting that resistance to come back in a few years once the moisture in the air hits it. That tiny bit of heat damage relly ruins the integrity of the wire long-term.
Quick update — I appreciate the heads-up about the wire oxidation. I went back into that box to check, and sure enough, the copper looked a bit dull. I ended up trimming it back to fresh metal just to be safe. I also ordered some of those Ideal Twister 341s since a few of you mentioned they’re more reliable than the generic ones I had on hand.
