I have a gas fireplace that has a switch in the wall to turn it on and off. The pilot is lit and I can turn it on manually, fire starts and fan runs as well. I changed the wall switch out but it still cannot be turned on from the wall switch. Any suggestions?

Thermocouple. If it does not sens the pilot flame it will not allow the gas to go on.
If the TC is bad, the piolt will not stay on and if the main burner does manage to come on, the TC will cut off the gas as soon as the override button is released.
Call an electrician.
Then it wouldn't start manually either. Since it does start manually, it is highly unlikely to be related to the thermocouple/thermopile, but rather a wiring issue, for which Gary's advice is germain - Hire an electrician.
No, it it is the thermocouple the pilot will go out. Also it would not be possible to "manually" control it. Ot will be a bad connection somewhere or a switch problem (or transformer if it is not a "thermopile" or "millivolt" system) - or MAYBE the transformer is on a switched circuit or has a blown fuse.
Sounds like you're not a fan of the approach we saw recently here in a.h.r where someone was just randomly trying to connect one wire to another, hoping to get lucky.

On my gas stove the wall switch is a mercury switch thermostat. It has one wire coming in, and one wire going out. The power for the switch is from the thermocouple so the stove works during power outages -- an important consideration up here.
