I did some work for a lawyer once and he stiffed me because I did not find evidence in favor of his drug dealing clients.
The next lawyer that hired me, I charged double my usual fee and demanded a retainer up front. I made out on him and he probably got rich with his iron clad liability case.
I worked with a lot of lawyers, mostly patent and environmental, and never met a bad one.
Many lawyers are OK, but then there are the ones on TV that give all a bad name.
Only had one personal experience. We hired a lawyer and took someone to court. Lawyers were going back and forth, back and forth. Finally, my wife stood up and said "This is what I want" and laid it out. Both lawyers sat stunned. Judge said "so ordered"
Male privilege... The wife said on the stand that she initiated the physical confrontation and drew blood. The husband wound up in the back of the cruiser.
The cops probably could have let it slide but the real asshole was the state prosecutor. He should have known what the wife was going to say when questioned. I never went to law school but I figured that out.
I only ever hired one, when I got divorced. At the time in Massachusetts you had to go through the whole horror show, including stating the grounds. We hit on 'cruel and abusive treatment' as the least unsavory alternative on the short list.
Some of the OSHA inspectors shouldn't have been let out in public without a minder but on the whole it's been a good thing. There were some flagrant abuses.
We set up a turnkey melamine dinnerware plant for a client. Melamine isn't all that bad unless you add it to dog food but the resin is produced by reacting melamine with formaldehyde. Heat the resin to 400 F and it's a bit pungent.
Anyway, the client was balking at the cost of the ventilation system we recommended. There was a mezzanine above the presses where the material was loaded into the hoppers and it was rank. When we took the CEO on the nickle tour we made sure it included quality time on the mezzanine. He signed off on the ventilators.
It was bad timing. The plant was up and running just in time for Corelle to hit the streets. The cats liked the melmac place settings. A few years later it was a memory and the Minnesota farm girls went back to milking cows for a living.
At least they never got smallpox...
