security camera recommendation

Some hoodlums shot at my house with a 9mm last Saturday. They managed to hit it both times. I think they were actually trying to hit a different hoodlum they were chasing as he ran past my house. (cop theory) They missed that loser.
Who would have thought this would be the first time a house of mine caught bullets after living in a rough Chicago neighborhood and then on the edge of a Houston hoodlum war zone. I thought we moved to a relatively safe hillbilly/redneck/hipster town.
We heard the shots. It sounded like they were coming from inside our house. POW! POW! The noise jerked me out of a drunken stupor, so it was really loud. I went and checked everywhere, walked outside. My hillbilly neighbors were all sleeping peacefully. I looked around in the house, saw nothing, then went back to bed.
The next morning we noticed glass on the floor and a bullet hole through a window. Outside, there was a second bullet hole in the side of the house. The window shot went through two panes of glass, a closed wooden blind, through the back of a built-in book case into the wall and substructure. No hope getting to that shell unless we take the wall apart.
The bullet that hit the side of the house only just managed to break the surface of the siding. The cops easily pulled out the shell. HardiePlank concrete siding is strong brother.
The cops did find both shell casings in the street.
What a circus that was later Saturday. Several police cars and the CSI (or whatever) cops on the scene measuring bullet holes and walking up and down the street looking for shell casings. My wife was basically in her pajamas on the walkway out near the street looking totally out of it confused as the cops were milling around. This affected her quite dramatically. I told her to come stand next to me so the neighbors didn't think we had been shooting at each other in some domestic disturbance. Rednecks/Hillbillies/Hipsters love something to gossip about.
My neighbor four houses over has a cheap security camera plugged into an electrical outlet and pointing out from their main front window onto our neighborhood street. She caught some pedestrian activity, then a sedan going up the street past her house at 12:40am. Then the camera shows the same car coming back down the street at 12:45am, passing in front of her house and then, about 5 seconds later (about the time they're at my house) gun shots: POW (one second) then POW. It's a bit chilling.
However, that's about all this camera was good for. The street is about 30 feet from the camera and you can't even tell what kind of car it was, let alone trying to get a still of a face or a license plate.
I've been researching the Internet and there are a plethora of options.
Here's what I want. Three decent cameras on the doors to my house. But, I want one camera that is super high definition with optical zoom that can do a frame capture of a hoodlum's tattoo from about 50-100 feet away.
I planned to do this DIY and asked my electrician about it. He recommended a security company. They were okay I guess, but I got the whole spiel and it just seems like a racket. The guy kept showing me clips from videos from his house cameras. Of course it's clear when a hoodlum is standing right next to the door. I'm not sure how many times I told him that that was all well and good, but I want to be able to see the individual flies buzzing around a pile of dog poop in the yard across the street.
I plan to buy all the equipment and either install it myself or have a person that does it all the time install it. That's not the issue. Also not the issue is iPhone apps, speakers, notifications, alerts etc. I'm assuming a lot of that will be available with whatever I end up with. If not, I'll figure something out.
I want to know if any of you guys have a security camera system that is really good and could do what I need. If so, recommendation please. Even if it's only the one or two cameras that are super high definition that can do what I want, that would be a start.
Thank you for listening.

You are better off with a nice .308 and a night vision scope, suppressor optional.

When you find a golden unicorn walking around in your yard, ask him. What you're asking for likely is not available at a cost that anyone would consider reasonable. Also your neighbors might get a bit testy with all the high lumen lighting point out from your house.

Same response as above. Ain't gonna happen.

+1 Something in a short barreled shotgun or a semi automatic pistol.

Look at the B & H Photo (NYC) WWW site. They carry a lot of high-end photo video stuff. I cannot tell you that they have what you are looking for.

Look at trail or game cameras. They're not that expensive so you could space some around different places. Some come with a lockable enclosure. Would adding motion sensitive solar lights be any help?

Per Dean Hoffman:

Game cams are attractive for the lack of wiring - as long as you aren't into reviewing alert pix to see what was going on last nite....i.e. the only time you want to access the pix is when you know something went down.
When buying, go for game cams with invisible IR instead of the ones that flash red when triggered.

Defeway cameras seem to have pretty good resolution. I know nothing about them at all, or any security cameras but, these:
http://www.insecam.org/en/bytype/Defeway/?page
images seem to be pretty clear. At the link, you'll find actual real life live images of the cameras in use.

Those look pretty good. The 2nd generation ones we had at the prison would allow you to read a newspaper on the dash of a car 100 feet away. The first ones were trash.

That is scary. I've always wondered if those type of cameras could see into your lap and into the interior of a vehicle. And red light cameras, I wonder if those can see everything in your vehicle or just the dashboard like you mentioned?

Per Mercellus Bohren:

I have been fooling around with IP cams for several years.
My impressions so far:
- Don't bet the mortgage money on being able to recognize perpetrator unless it is somebody who you are already familiar with (gait, body proportions, and so-forth) In the cams I have fooled around with (max rez 2048 x 1536, but mostly using 1920 x 1080) the detail for real facial recognition of a stranger is just no there.
I am guessing it is there on *somebody's* product, but not the ones I have used.
- Look up the distinction between "Bullet" and "Turret" cams. You want "Turret" for their greater resistance to tampering. Bullet cams are nicknamed "Pinatas" for a reason. Also, for some reason, bullet cams' IR is like a magnet for spiders (the webs mess up a cam's motion sensing) and turret cam's IR is not.
- My guess is that the gold standards for facial recognition and detail in general are found in casino security cams.
- I use something called BlueIris that runs on my 24-7 PC and currently controls 6 cams. The PC is an I-7 and BI sucks up 40-50% of the CPU.
I have six cams at a remote location on an Athlon machine and they basically bring it to it's knees with CPU at 100% whenever I connect to do maintenance.
BlueIris works and does a lot of neat stuff, but I would call it an enthusiast's product and not a turnkey utility. If you know DVR software, it's analogous to SageTV vs TIVO.
- Beware of cams with proprietary software. Most have generic web pages that you can connect to from any browser, but a few bad actors go proprietary.
- The cams I use and prefer are these guys (available in 2.8mm wide-angle and 6mm regular): http://tinyurl.com/y7fdv6kn
- You probably want cams with a feature called POE (Power Over Ethernet). That means that the Ethernet cable also supplies power to the cam so you only need one wire. For that you also need a POE switch or an el-cheapo POE injector.

That's disappointing. I see advertisements for the doorbell cameras and they show a clears, sharp view. I'll have to see one IRL before I put out the money for one.

They do exist but not a consumer level or even professional level - for the most part. He was looking for that sort of detail at 12:30AM in a residential neighborhood, not a flood light lit parking lot or sports stadium. I can easily pull 4K video from my drone at distances of > 150' in the DAYLIGHT, won't do squat in the middle of the night unless there is supplemental illumination. Surprisingly, one can get some decent imaging from a b&w video camera. Issue becomes one of resolution and quality of the lens. B&W video chips are IR sensitive and can function well in near darkness at relatively close range. Still that 50-100' range and quality the OP wants is really pushing it even with top of the line gear

I bought a Ring last week for the front door. The view is very good even to the house across the street and it sits back from the street.
I doubt that it would pick up facial features from the street. A camera on a utility pole might do that if paralleling the street - or a license plate.
Some of our interior walls are a foot thick and the signal needs an amplifier to transmit around corners to my cell in the den.
There is a lot of Ring info with your browser.

It serves my purposes - it may or may not be what others need.

In case a liberal comes to visit one of us needs to be confined in the cell to ptotect him.
I emerge from my den to answer nature's call, eat, sleep (usually) and doctor visits. Should I have said "cell phone", my bad (if that is still a current term).
