Recommended minimum distance between window and roof

Hi Folks,

I can't find this in the local code. Is there a recommended minimum distance between the bottom of a second story window, and the top roof line of a porch being added below? Is 6-8" sufficient? Thanks,

-- Jeff

The normal range in our neighborhood is from 6" up to 36". One house has a space of just 4". They all look ok and I've noticed that few of my neighbors even realize that there is such a variety around them. Few folks even notice.

Besides looking in the local code, you can quiz your local code enforcement people. You can also phone the zoning folks in nearby communities to get a variety of free opinions.

Good luck, Gideon

There is no code requirement for minimum distance between window sill and porch roof. I would suggest 8 inches or more. This should leave enough room for flashing below sill and from roof to wall.
