That has gotten a lot better since the new pollution standards have gone into place in the PRC (People's Republic of California) and the old cars have largely been aged out. It has been a very long time since I have seen pictures of air pollution like that in Los Angles.
And "coal powered rolling firebomb cars/trucks" only moves the pollution to somewhere else.
A far, far better solution is hydrogen and natural gas fuel cell vehicles.
