Parodies are an exception to copyright rules, under the Fair Use doctrine, so there are no copyright issues in his songs.
Plus he says that most of the writers of the songs he's parodied have called him to say they approve, and that Steven Sondheim has had him to his house and iirc acted as a mentor.
