I had a dishwasher that would drain. Spent a lot of time cycling and recycling, so much that I heated the water over and over and softened and warped a little bit the plstic salad bowl that I had left int he upper rack.
It turned out to be in the air break at the sink, a chicken bone, the little one from a chicken drumstick. It wasn't big enough to fill any tube, afaict, so it must have done someething else. Water never overflowed from the air break.

That would NOT drain.
I don't know. Where would the filter be? It had iirc a plastic grill in the bottom with holes about 2mm square, but the bone got through it.

Sounds like a bad design of filter. You'd think the filter would have holes such that anything thin enough to pass would not cause a problem further down the line. My dishwasher has a fine filter before it goes to the drain pump, but a coarse filter before it goes to the sprayers, which is stupid, since bits of food get stuck inside the sprayer arms and they're very difficult to open up without breaking them.
