I'm engaged in a conversation with my brother-in-law on this ridiculous subject. Google hasn't been much help, neither has Quora. Any logical opinions?

Maybe "Is a bird more evolved than a turtle?" would be a better question.
Birds seem to be smarter than the title bird-brain makes them sound.
Have you seen the famous video of a bird bending a wire to make a hook, so he can lift a tiny bucket of food out of a hole that's too small for him to stick his head in and eat the food directly?
IIRC tool usage was thought at one time to be a human-only activity, and for sure tool-making was thought to be that.
OTOH,maybe he was a bird genius. And where are the trade schools and vocational high schools build by one set of bird to teach these skills to the younger generation of birds?
About turtles I know even less

Wow. That's really impressive. And I didn't know grubs came that big.
I've heard there are bird sanctuaries now which don't allow birds to carry a stick when they enter. Open or concealed.
That's because turtles hire birds to do their hard work.
