Isn't it easier and more effective to kick him in the back of the knee so that he falls down? Not even that hard is needed and you can always do it again or do the other knee since his back is to you.

You have to be careful that you are not seen as an "attacker". If you injured someone, breaking up a fight, you might get sued or even arrested. In this litigious world, no good deed goes unpunished. Unless you have a very good case that you are preventing death or serious injury, it is better to dial 9-11 if you see 2 strangers fighting and just watch them fight. When it involves friends and you know what is going on YMMV. In Florida you can use deadly force to prevent a death or serious injury. Again, you better know your state laws. Maryland is not as easy going on this. You might end up doing time.
The other thing to keep in mind is that someone in the crowd whipped out his phone and now has video of the whole thing which will likely end up on some social media platform
That's fine. In the case that prompted my post, a guy was attacking a stewardess and it took several people to restrain him. ISTM that a kick to the back of his moderate knee would bring him down quickly. If not a kick to the back of the other knee. That was topic of the OP. Fretwell's detour didn't help to answer that.
You are better off hitting him in the head with something heavy if physical force is justified. Take him out of the fight. Just be sure you can justify it in court because you may end up there.
Grabbing the arms is easier on the stunt man than kicking him in the knee.

That doesn't work like in the movies. More likely the result will be angering him further or doing brain damage, and I don't want either.
Plus in an airplane and many other situations you'd be hard pressed to find something heavy and hard. OTOH, people always have their feet with them.
That might be it!
They just had an incident in NYC couple weeks ago where a black woman tried to intervene in a fight between two men, I think she knew at least one of them. She wound up shot and dead. I agree about the possible legal jeopardy too.
