Probably not fake. Just an idiot. I do know the tubes will glow when excited by enough RF. I have done that with my Ham radio.
He did seem to fry his hand when he got too close to the microwave at one point. I can believe that too.

The first company I worked for made dielectric preheaters for the plastics industry. Basically they were a Colpitts or Hartley oscillator built around an Eimac triode where you placed the material to be heated between the capacitor plates in the tank circuit. They ran around 100 MHz and while the frequency did slowly change as the material heated it didn't affect the FM band. They were 7.5 KW or 15 KW depending on the application. To test the shielding we'd use a fluorescent tube taped to a broomstick. Very scientific. If it lit you had some more work to do before trying a polar plot.
There were hexagonal patterns of 5/16" holes in the access door for ventilation and it was handy to see how the material was doing as you fine tuned the times so we screwed battery clips to the inner walls of the cavity and popped in T5 bulbs. That was a source of mystery to some plant electricians that had never had anything to do with RF.
Sometimes we would run without all the panels in place when we were troubleshooting. Nobody ever fried themselves but you could definitely feel your larger muscles getting warm. DIY diathermy.
This was before microwaves became popular and it didn't take the factory workers long to figure out if it could heat plastic, it could heat dinner. We kept one of the little 2.5 KW bench models in the engineering lab. Did wonders for the day old goods from the bakery down the street.
The company did make a few industrial strength microwaves for restaurants but they missed the consumer market entirely.

ROFL! M'colleague was always up to stuff like that, buying things using the wrong accounts - "water heater" meant kettle, but the accountant didn't know that. The supplier saw the correct code for a kettle and sent a kettle, but the description fooled the admins.

It could have been anything but the clips were just the right size to hold a T5 tube and they had a convenient hole to attach to the panel with a 10-32 screw. It added to the electrician's confusion that they were a component they recognized and they were both attached to an aluminum panel that was a conductor so there wasn't any circuit. You could have duct taped it to the panel like the $120,000 banana and gotten the same effect. The heaters and filaments of the fluorescent weren't doing anything, just the rf field.
I'd assume thermodynamic played a part. More mass, relatively less surface area.

That should heat the smaller muscles more. The microwaves couldn't reach the insides of your larger muscles (you big hunk you), just try heating 1kg of ice cubes in a microwave, at the same time as a solid 1kg block of ice. The microwaves will melt the cubes first.

Many electricians and workers in other fields are not very well educated. They may know how to install things by code and that is often it.
Friend went to the big box store and a plumbing supply place. He wanted some tubing benders for 3/8 inch tubing. They had those. He asked about the marks on the bender as he had never used one before. I had told him about the marks being there, but had not used one in a long time and not much then so I could not explain the marks talking to him on the phone. The sales people could not even tell him that are to allow for the ammount of 'streach' you get when you bend a tube at a certain angle, let alone how to use the marks.
Where I worked we had a building project and it was suppose to be turned over to us ready to work. It didn't. I checked out one piece of equiepment. It was 3 phase and had 3 fuses in line. The heater did not work. I told him he had a bad fuse. He could not understand how the power could feed through the other 2 fuses to the 3 rd one. Found another that was wired wrong, several elements in parallel. After he made 3 tries to repair it, I told him to throw the prints off the side of the building as either he could not read them or they were wrong. Took me about 10 minuits to wire it and I had never seen that equipment before. Worked fine for around 10 years before I retired. Probably still going.
Mistake and error are both nouns. Bad is an adjective. I guess Americans don't understand noun and adjective.

Never spend much time in factories, have you? In the '60s many plant electricians, while competent at their jobs, were behind the curve when it came to anything other than wiring up big motors and transformers.

They understood ladder diagrams. The microprocessor based controllers went out of their way to use the ladder metaphor. I thought they would die out with that generation but apparently many PLCs still use the ladder metaphor.
I drew ladder diagrams when I was designing controls with actual relays and Eagle Signal timers but when it came to something with a microcontroller I used assembly language. It's all logic but the ladder diagram is a higher level abstraction for what is really happening.
I once flew out to a customer's plant to replace a fuse. That was after a long telephone conversation where I asked several times if he had checked the fuses and he swore he had. Unlike a 3 phase induction motor the preheater would sort of operate on two phases but not very well.
Oh well. Air travel wasn't quite as screwed up in those days and a packet of Smokehouse Almonds and a scotch and water soothed me down.
Plant electricians don't necessarily know much about the code either. At least in NH and ME you needed a licensed electrician to do the work on the other side of your entrance. Inside the building it was the Wild West. We leased an old bakery for a while and I approached everything with caution particularly since the 550 VAC that was supposed to be for the freight elevator showed up in the damnedest places.
The Brits took several perfectly good Germanic languages and f***ed them up completely. If that wasn't bad enough they mixed in a little Frog, Latin, and Swahili.
I saw a photo of Sturgeon after the election and she looked altogether too happy. Even better, Paisley's Peckheads lost seats. Pretty soon the United Kingdom will be Britain and Wales.
