Bought lime to use as whitewash and it is brown and "pelletised"
How do you get old fashioned lime these days?
How can you be sure from the label?

You bought limestone (calcium carbonate). You need slaked lime.
Ask for the right thing. I found it on Amazon. You might be able to find it locally.
It's calcium hydroxide.
You can use your limestone to amend your garden soil, if its pH is too low.
