Installing a window air conditioner in the top sash

Mar 18, 2006 2 Replies

Hi all--

In Manhattan, you'll notice some air conditioners are actually installed in the top sash of the window so the lower sash is is left clear. Has anyone attempted this installation or is this something the pros do? How difficult is it to do.

Thanks

Not hard, but ... you do have to know what you're doing. It's not always wise to let the ac sit & vibrate on the windows underneat it! Sometimes a brace is used, or it was at least, in the apt we had in Chgo "way back when".

You're right. All a/c's i've seen like this all seem to have some metal bar attached to the brick or window frame supporting the bottom of the a/c. Obviously someone skilled at drilling from the outside!
