How easily does chopped ivy grow?

If I tear dead ivy off my wall and leave it on the ground, and chop it up with a lawn mower, will the little pieces grow and make even more ivy??

What if only the leaves are involved and they are green, can they sprout?

What if the ivy is dead, brown, and dried out, will it still sprout?

While I seriously doubt that little chopped up pieces will sprout, I guess it's possible if you end up with all the correct parts still intact.

See the section on "leaf-bud cuttings" at the link below. It mentions 2 examples of the type of ivy that can be propagated from a leaf cutting, but you need more than just the leaf itself.

I'd call my local cooperative extension for a more definitive answer based on my exact situation: type of ivy, climate, soil conditions, time of year, etc.

Dead, brown *and* dried out? I think you could have stopped at "Dead".

Dead - No.

Brown - Maybe. The live stems are often brown.

Dried out - Completely? See "Dead".

Some more tips...

Thanks. I hadn't thought to search on the word cuttings.

Good idea.

I guess I was comparing it with people who can be dead but not yet dried out. Not quite the same as plants.

Actually, it is the same. Dead people, even if they are not dried out, don't sprout. That's pretty much the same as dead plants.
