Trading tailpipe emissions for more controllable power plant emissions is an obvious way to limit greenhouse gases.

And they are encouraging manufacturers to make more efficient appliances and people to use them. And to use renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydro rather than coal, oil, and gas.

So which EVs do you own and use daily?

Which EV do you use for a 600 mile road trip?

Plenty of coal will still be there. Years ago I saw a syngas project used to make acetic acid. You can go further and make any hydrocarbon you need. Of course it will cost more.

Any of them. Yes, you will have to stop perhaps twice to charge vs once for gas.

People have taken very long trips with them.

New solid state batteries are nearing production and they will have 600+ mile range and fast charge.

At present I have given up on EVs other than my "hybrid" bicycle. My next vehicle will in all likelihood be a plug-in hybrid since 90%+ of my driving would be shorter than the electric range. My neighbour goes MONTHS without using any gasoline - with a Prius Prime and even if he goes to visit his son he can recharge there and do theround trip on no gas. Only winter driving requires gasoline to provide heat and range. I scrapped my last EV about 1983.

True but you have to account for other efficiencies such as creating the electricity and transmission. Then there is the extra energy required to increase the electric infrastructure and built new charging stations. There is also the huge cost of battery replacement which essentially means the potential lifetime of the EV may be half that of an ICE vehicle and a lot of energy is expended to build new EV's.

Hybrids present much less of a problem. The ICE engine runs at maximum efficiency. Much smaller batteries cost much less to replace. Vehicle longevity is much better.

The crypto guys might have been priced out of the game as AI sucks up every GPU it can find. Nvidia is making money hand over fist but so far I don't think anyone else is.

Google is rolling their own. That's for the big players but the NPU's that will be incorporated into the AI enabled PCs they pushing are power hungry too. A Tesla in the driveway and AI in the den is going to stress the local power company.

There is a lot of exciting new small nuclear reactors that can not melt down and the fuel in contained in ceramic spheres for easy containment.

I do believe if you were to follow the money on this Green nonsense, you'd find a lot of Left Wing cronies getting rich off it.

There is more to the story. You need to consider the efficiency of the creation of the electricity, its distribution loss, the charging batter loss, and the motor loss.

Don't charging stations include chargers? What else would they have, just parking spots?

Picture a gas station. The chargers are analogous to the pumps.

Many have been vandalized. Plenty of people that don't like EV so they resort to childish tactics to annoy the owners.

Yeah, except the pumps usually work and the nozzle fits your car :) It's getting better with more uniformity but some of the complaints were out of order chargers at the charging stations or a plug that didn't fit your receptacle.

I've only seen a couple but they were unattended self-serve locations.

Hope they catch them and make them pay the owners hundred if not thousands of dollars in reparations for the repairs-- plus lost revenue if they were pay chargers. I could get behind adding stiff fines and a little jail time too :-)
