Where I live (Montgomery County, Maryland, USA) only licensed master plumbers are authorized to do installations and/or modifications of gas appliances and their hookups to the appliance's gas supply. Even then, those plumbers are required to obtain a permit from the county. When the work is completed, the work must pass an inspection by the county appointed organization designated to do inspections before the installation or modification can be turned on. Violations carry strict financial penalties. Homeowner's use the services of commercial plumbers who are licensed in our county to perform that work.

True in most places for permits and licenses. If the law was followed, many hardware stores would be closed. I'd probably be in jail for all the work I've done for myself and friends.

I have a good friend who is a certified gas tech - he did the actual connection to the meter and inspected/passed all my pipe work. John has met Ed. Nice guy.

When I put the 1/2 inch line in initially I did it myself and called the gas co for the inspection. Passed with flying colours!!!

In Michigan, homeowners are allowed to do pretty much anything to their house, provided they pull a permit and have the work inspected. I think charging a central air-conditioning unit with coolant is an exception.

The inspectors seem to like my husband. The electrical inspector said, "You need another ground. I know you'll do it, so I'll give you the green card."

One thing I could mention. Decades ago I DID have my propane installation and service licence to work on propane powered vehicles and RVs- so I do know a bit about gaseous fuels. Let the certifications go circa 1985??

If it's gas fired, and your house blows up, LOL to you! It seems every week or two there are a few reports on evening news broadcasts of massive gas explosions pulverizing private homes. I wonder if it's a result of faulty work performed by weekend do-it-yourselfers.

My husband installed our gas plumbing 24 years ago. So far, so good.

All you need are some hose barbs and some good quality garden hose. NG is less than 1 psi.
