Furance Reviews / Ratings

We are looking to replace the furnace in our house and we are looking for a site that gives reviews on different brands of furnaces. Couldn't find one on Consumer Reports website.

Thanks!

A good furnace and a bad installer is a bad furnace. A poor furnace and a good installer is an okay furnace.

Pick the installer and let him pick the brand....

This is Turtle.

The reason there is not very much of any reviews and compairison studys for there is the % AFUE rating which just about tells all and a 95% AFUE rated furnace can be installed by a hack and easily make the 95% AFUE rated furnace run at 50% AFUE and then screw up everytime you turn around. The installer can make or break a good AFUE rated furnace and make a piece of trash out of it. It is all left up to the Installer to get the good review or a poor review.

You can read all you want about them..they are ALL about the same, other than prices of parts, and the name on the unit means NOTHING..its the quality of the installer that matters....period. Find an installer you trust, can check out, and go with what he has.

If you have CR online , then PAY for an old article review, or better yet, Learn, and get prices and fact sheets

I have to agree. Most now are pretty much the same. Just compare prices and energy efficiency rating. And most importantly, get a reputable installer and don't think that whatever they quote you for the furnace and installation charge is standard pricing.

When we shopped for a new furnace/air conditioner unit, from the

*same* manufacturer we were quoted as much as $3,000 difference between various heating/ac installers.

Also, don't always believe the installer when they recommend a particular unit/brand. Many times they are pushing a particular brand because they're getting manufacturer incentives and has nothing to do with one unit being better than another (as quoted from a friend of mine that's been in the business for more than 20 years).

Just stick with a major brand so you won't get stuck later with expensive repairs because the parts are proprietary.

You were correct until you got to the very last sentence. Then your wisdom hit the floor. Major Brand? Try Lennox and Carrier. Ask for the price on a Carrier or Lennox circuit board, pressure switch or gas valve, etc. Then try the same on a Goodman, Nordyne or even a Rheem. You'll find major differences in prices for the same type part. Lennox and Carrier parts have gold in them it seems. Bubba

I stand corrected. You are absolutely correct. I didn't catch what I had posted until you replied. We had a Carrier before we swapped it out for a Rheem. The price to maintain the Carrier was out of this world and for some reason, it was always Murphys Law that whatever part that just happen to die on us, had to be carried by donkey from Muldavia and made on the laps of virgins *and* made only two months out of the year and, of course, in limited quality with rare metals only found on Mars.
